Canada Post - Developer Program

Overview

As a Lead Product Designer, I was engaged through a one-year fixed-term contract with Adecco to define the end-to-end design strategy for Canada Post’s Enterprise eCommerce Developer Program. My role focused on reimagining the developer experience, aligning the program with modern API best practices, and ensuring a seamless, scalable, and self-service platform for developers integrating Canada Post’s services.

CONTEXT

The Developer Program is a comprehensive API solution designed for businesses and developers to seamlessly integrate parcel and logistics services into their applications. It provides access to key Canada Post APIs, including Rating, Pick up & Shipping, Tracking, Returns and Find a post office.

However, the existing Developer Program, which has been in operation for over a decade, is built on an outdated on-premise solution. The current system relies on older protocols, making it inflexible, difficult to maintain, and unable to meet modern developer needs. Developers faced a long and complex setup process, leading to frustration and high support dependency. Documentation and API resources lacked intuitive navigation, making it hard for developers to find and implement what they needed

As the lead product designer, my task was to redefine the developer experience by creating a design strategy for a next-generation developer portal. The goal is to streamline the onboarding process, reduce time-to-integration. Enhances discoverability of API documentation, code samples, and resources. Empowers developers with a scalable, intuitive, and modern self-service experience.Increases API adoption & usage, driving business growth.

Approach

Given the tight one-year timeline, I followed a Double Diamond Design Process, ensuring a structured, iterative approach to problem-solving.

Understand & describe the problem

  • Conducted a UX audit, stakeholder interviews, and data analysis to Identified key pain points, including complex onboarding, poor documentation, and lack of self-service resources.
  • Defined developer personas, journey maps, and feature priorities for Beta, MVP, and Full Launch..
  • Established a scalable information architecture (IA) to improve navigation and discoverability.

Design solutions

  • Designed user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity prototypes for an intuitive self-service portal.
  • Collaborated with the Design System team and content strategists to ensure a cohesive and accessible experience.

Test prototypes

  • Conducted usability and accessibility testing with internal developers.
  • Gathered feedback and refined UI components, documentation, and onboarding flows.
